can be a challenge! Most everyone agrees that RC model helicopters are the single most challenging R/C models to build and operate, and electric helicopters are no exception. In fact, because their flight times are shorter than gas powered units, it can hinder someone just learning the ropes and their sensitivity to wind can intimidate beginners too.
They're mechanically complex and they require you to master two distinctly different skills, forward flight and hovering. To pilot them successfully, your FULL attention is required. There have recently been some very impressive advances which give more hobbyists a good shot at getting electric RC helicopters in the air and keeping them there.
But if the question is, "Should my very first R/C model be a helicopter?"...I'd have to say no. You'll be much more ready and relaxed with a heli if you learn to fly a plane or glider first. We strongly recommend that you visit our airplane section, where there's no shortage of other exciting ways to go airborne. What Can an Electric RC Helicopter Do?
The answer is, just about anything that involves flying! They'll hover in one spot. Fly backwards and sideways. Do pirouettes while in forward flight. Perform stall turns, loops, rolls, standing loops and rolls (a loop or roll with no forward speed)...even fly upside-down and hover while only inches off the ground. Let's see an airplane, or even a full-size helicopter, do that! In normal forward flight, electric helicopters fly at about 20-30 mph and approximately 150 feet high.
PREREQUISITES
It helps to have good building skills for assembling electric rc helicopters. If not, take the time to develop them in this hobby. You'll need a sufficiently large space and hopefully uninterrupted time...from 2 hours for a simple setup to hundreds of hours for more complex RC model helicopters. Have an open mind and be willing to learn new things. Being methodical will help solve many problems you'll encounter in the hobby. You don't need fast reflexes to succeed, but you must be able to develop new ones. Optimism and sense of humor can help, especially after an electric RC helicopters mishap. More often than not, patience is a virtue.
DUE DILIGENCE
Find a local club and flying field to get a firsthand look of the exciting world of electric helicopters and meet the flyers - they will become valuable help. If there are no local clubs, check out Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and its monthly publication Model Aviation and try to find the closest club in your area. Try to attend a fly-in of electric helicopters or an airshow nearby (see calendar posted in Model Aviation or ask your local hobby shop) and watch how the pros do it.
Once you're committed to the hobby, apply for an AMA membership as soon as possible. It's a requirement for clubs/flying fields, and you'll get a very good insurance policy, too. Get some literature, either an RC heli magazine, a book, or video tape and I highly recommend checking out these

If youve researched it further, you know that it isnt always the cheapest of hobbies!
Sure you can get an inexpensive remote control airplane these days, but depending on the size, power, detail, and level of control of the aircraft, some RC plane models and components can cost quite a bit.
It isnt always the simplest of hobbies either. It can take a fair bit of time and patience to really learn to fly some airplanes.
So what makes people spend their hard earned money and precious time on building and flying remote control airplane models anyway?
Part of the fun and challenge for many people is in the construction of the model aircraft itself. If you like to tinker with anything electrical or mechanical, then you probably know what Im talking about here. Some people, like me, just love to make things whether it's a plane or a play house for my two girls!
You can see this all around in people that like to work on their cars and houses, build furniture, make dollhouses or toys, and put together replicas of famous cars and ships. And for those who like detail and precision, creating and building an RC plane definitely has its rewards.
When building a remote control airplane, there is first the challenge of making a sturdy piece of equipment that is also realistic and finely detailed. Creating wooden frames, adding components, and giving your craft precise painting and decals can be quite the challenge.
And once you get the structure all put together, there are the inner workings to consider. The engine, power source, fuel lines if nitro and wiring if electric, and the radio receiver. There are also the finer RC plane components such as landing gear and propellers.
All of these must be considered, chosen, and accurately assembled into the RC airplane. You can purchase all kinds of parts and gadgets for your model, and sometimes choosing the right components can be a large part of the enjoyment. I've lost track of the countless hours I've spent putting things my RC plane together in just the right way and experimenting with different methods and styles.
Once you get all of your parts and get the remote control airplane built, this is just the beginning because then you've got the maiden flight to look forward to. In fact for some of us RC nuts, getting the plane into the air isnt even the best part, it's tinkering with it afterwards!
But if building isnt your thing you can even buy a ready to fly RC plane with no assembly required - just recharge the batteries or prime the carburetor and away you go.
Or if you like some of the challenge you can buy RC airplane kits that require anywhere from mid to minimal construction effort. However you decide to get the RC plane, the next challenge is getting it into the air and keeping it there.
There is a lot of skill in flying a remote control airplane, and the fun and challenge of it keeps people coming back for more. Of course one of the greatest draws of flying an RC plane is that it is a hobby you can enjoy by yourself, with friends, or with your family.

Nikko limits their line to electric vehicles that operate on radio frequencies and does not participate in making any remote control vehicles (the ones with the wire attached to the car).
